(CNN) — The judge in James Holmes’ murder trial on Tuesday accepted his plea of not guilty by reason of insanity.

The suspect in last summer’s shooting spree that killed 12 people and wounded dozens at an Aurora, Colorado, movie theater will be taken to the Colorado Mental Health Institute at Pueblo for evaluation.

He’s expected to be returned to the Arapahoe County Jail on August 2.

Judge Carlos Samour Jr. has told attorneys he expects the trial to take place in 2014.

The burden is on the prosecution to prove that Holmes was sane at the time of the shootings. Attorneys will use the results of the mental evaluation as evidence at the trial.

Samour’s ruling Tuesday came about a month after Holmes’ attorneys asked to change his plea from a standard not guilty. The original not-guilty plea was entered by a judge on Holmes’ behalf…

$1 billion in cocaine intercepted en route to U.S.

Yea, there is one very pissed off drug lord out there

FOX6Now.com

(CNN) — Authorities intercepted two speedboats — sinking one — and recovered about 13,000 pounds of cocaine worth almost $1 billion.

Indeed, that’s billion with a B.

“These two disruptions are an example of the international cooperative law enforcement effort to disrupt transnational criminal activity and deny their profiting from such activity,” Doug Garner, U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s director of national air security operations in Jacksonville, Florida, said in a news release.

The Memorial Day weekend drug bust, which was announced Wednesday, resulted from two separate interdiction efforts, the first unfolding Friday north of the Galapagos Islands, west of Ecuador in the Pacific Ocean.

A Customs and Border Protection Office of Air and Marine crew spotted a 30-foot speedboat carrying almost 7,000 pounds of cocaine worth more than $500 million. After realizing that they’d been spotted, three people on the boat started chucking packages of cocaine into the water…

How police can find your deleted text messages

Yea, the whole password and security lock is to keep your friends and family out of. I think we can all agree that doesn’t apply to law officials, especially those with tech

FOX6Now.com

LAS VEGAS (CNNMoney) — Think that a secure password and erasing your phone’s memory will protect sensitive information on your smartphone? Think again.

Smartphone forensics experts can retrieve just about anything from any phone. Police will often seize and analyze phones for evidence of things such as indecent photos and videos, what calls were placed when and to whom, browser history, calendar events and explanations of a suicide or murder.

All of that can be uncovered whether or not a user deleted it from their phone.

“It makes it much, much harder, but wiping a phone doesn’t always mean you can’t get the data,” said Courtney Lancaster, forensic analyst with IT consulting company TCS, at the CTIA wireless industry trade show in Las Vegas.

Forensic analysts have dozens of tools that allow them to access many layers of data on a device.

A so-called “physical” analysis can typically retrieve deleted…

Apple’s offshore tax havens come under harsh spotlight

An intriguing and bold statement said by Sen Rand Paul of Kentucky. On one hand he does make sense but on the other it looks like exactly what it does… A sham

FOX6Now.com

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) — Apple’s strategy of avoiding U.S. taxes came under a harsh spotlight on Capitol Hill Tuesday.

Michigan Sen. Carl Levin, chairman of the Senate’s Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations, and ranking member John McCain of Arizona both started the hearing with withering criticism of Apple’s practice of shifting income to Ireland, to avoid paying U.S. taxes.

Levin called the practice a “sham,” while McCain said that Apple’s claims that it did not reduce its U.S. taxes is “demonstrably false.”

“U.S. corporations cannot continue to avoid paying their appropriate share in taxes,” said McCain. “Our military can’t afford it. Our economy cannot endure it. And the American people will not tolerate it.”

The comments came on top of a report released Monday by Levin and McCain detailing Apple’s tax strategy. CEO Tim Cook and other top executives are slated to testify later.
